Celebrate the richness, brilliance, and creativity of Black artistry and its cultural impact at the Black History Month Festival! This vibrant event honors the legacy and ongoing contributions of the Black community through art, performance, and connection.
This year's festival is themed Interwoven, inspired by the artistic practices of Faith Ringgold and Angela Hennessy, who use quilting and hair weaving to tell powerful stories of connection and community.
Planned in partnership with Shonna McDaniels of the Sojourner Truth Museum, this year's festival celebrates interconnectedness and intersectionality through performances, art activities, activations, talks, and gallery experiences. With opportunities for all ages to learn, create, and celebrate together, this dynamic day uplifts community voices and centers Black artistry in all its forms.
Highlights include:
Weaving the Sunflowers, a collaborative art experience led by Poppy and Pot and Keia Kodama, where visitors weave together hair, fabric, and florals to create collective artwork.
Art activities and activations with Poppy + Pot, Keia Kodama, Sojourner Truth Museum, Sacramento Quilters Guild, and Gerry “GOS” Simpson, Beth Rubel, Shawtay Gorman, Jermaine Tilson, and others.
Performances and presentations from community partners including Sojourner Truth Museum, Land Park Juneteenth Festival, Celebration Arts, City2City Cowboys, Black Women United, Sacramento Food Literacy Center, Bronze Girl Productions, and Harley White Jr.
Generous support for this program provided by Art Bridges.
