Setting Sun on Sacramento Valley

Setting Sun on Sacramento Valley, n.d.

Chiura Obata (American, born Japan, 1885–1975)

Woodblock print; ink and colors on paper, 15-5/8 in. x 10-7/8 in. Crocker Art Museum, gift of the Family of Chiura Obata, 1995.13.1

As an American artist trained in both traditional and modern Japanese art, Obata provides a unique interpretation of the heroic landscape tradition celebrating expansive views of the West. Here, flamelike clouds set the sky ablaze in this fiery sunset over the Sacramento Valley.

During a trip to Sendai, Japan, Obata collaborated with Japanese master printers to create the World Landscape Series (1930), a collection of woodblock prints based on some of his previous works, which included this scene based on a previous scroll painting.

LOOK FOR: Although the exact location is unknown, a subtle dome on the horizon emphasizes the flat valley with mountains along either side.
